Preparation
As with all coating applications good preparation and planning is key to success. Read the data sheets, plan the schedule for application taking into account re-coat times, check that new concrete is dried in accordance with the data sheet, check if primers are required and above all prepare the floor in accordance with the products being applied.
The key techniques for floor surface preparation are: blasting, diamond grinding and scabbling/ planing, for more detailed information on floor preparation click here. For further information on surface preparation click here.
If patches and holes exist in the floor Floor Fix Patch can be used to repair local areas. Application is straightforward and the patch can be feathered to a fine edge.
Previously uncoated concrete floors may be extremely porous and will gas when coated causing surface bubbling. Either prime first using Floor Fix Primer or if this occurs after one coat, lightly sand back after the first coat is sand dry.
Scabbling and Planing
This is generally used on poor condition floors to remove the surface back to a sound substrate. Typically this technique is best left to the professionals and is used prior to the application of screeds, after this process the substrate is coarse and not suitable for a coating without post diamond grinding. Contact Floor Fix for more guidelines or suitable preparation companies in your area.
Blasting
Blasting in conjunction with a dust recovery system is the most commonly used method of surface preparation, prior to the application of a coating. The process involves shot blasting the surface to clean and remove any old coatings. Use of the machine, although bulky, is straightforward and they are available for hire. Blasting can be used with hand grinding close to vertical edges. Blasting provides an almost imperceptible surface key and is suitable for application of coatings.
Diamond Grinding
This is also a very common form of floor preparation, with larger stand-up machines available for large areas and hand grinders used for small areas and getting close to vertical edges. The principle is to use rotating diamond cutters held flat to the surface. For dust free hand grinding of edges or smaller areas, a simple 9 ins grinder with diamond head can be used with the Floor Fix SmartHood. Grinding provides a good smooth surface and is suitable for application of coatings on tip.
Priming
For definitive guidelines follow the data sheet. Most Floor Fix products can be applied without priming, however existing coatings must have a key by either diamond grinding or sanding. Oil contaminated surfaces can be cleared using proprietary oil removing agents followed by the application of Floor Fix OR. Heavily oil contaminated floors may require hot air blasting prior to coating application.
