Resin Application Trade Tips

Most coatings are applied by roller with a brush used to apply in tight corners. Significant force is applied to the roller so a standard ‘cantilever type’ paint roller is not suitable. The roller should be supported at both ends and a short or medium pile roller used, depending on sub surface roughness. The roller is a consumable and should be discarded between coats.
Self smoothing coatings are applied by pouring and troweling to the approximate thickness, then rolling with a spiked roller at the required thickness (3mm spikes for 3mm thickness). After approximately 15 minutes a specialist spiked roller is used to help outgassing and prevent bubble craters appearing. If necessary spiked shoes are used to walk on the surface for this process.
Lack of thorough mixing is the most common cause of application failure, ensure the base and activator are thoroughly mixed, preferably by using a slow speed paddle or cycloidal mixer.
Note the material usable time from the data sheets and follow this carefully. Times are usually quoted for an ambient temperature of 20C and the time will increase or decrease with lower or higher temperatures respectively. For large areas it is advisable to have someone mixing and one or two teams applying, a wet edge must also be maintained during application for best results.
Further Coats
The data sheets include information on overcoating windows, resin coatings do have a maximum overcoat time and it is important the guidelines are followed. It is usually best to overcoat as soon as the first coat is ‘walk dry.’ If necessary spiked shoes can be used, particularly when applying self smoothers.
Curing
Resin coatings do have a specific cure time, which is usually about one week to achieve full strength. However traffic can usually commence after 24 to 48 hours. Again it is important to note the data sheet guidelines.
